Custom quilting is all freehand and almost unlimited, feathers, swirls, vines, crosshatching, stitch-in-the-ditch and echo quilting are all examples of custom quilting and there are many more.

Heirloom quilting is another example and requires considerable skill and is very time consuming but some quilts call for this type of work.
