Basting is a process of joining the quilt layers together in preparation for hand quilting as an alternative to the difficult task of keeping the layers from bunching and shifting with dozens of small safety pins.

Basting can be done in a contrast thread to make removal easy and can be in a grid or an all-over meander as required.
